Local Agenda 21 (LA21)
 
In June 1992, a total of 178 Heads of State (including Malaysia) attended the Earth Summit of the United Nations in Rio De Janerio, Brazil to prepare an action plan for sustainable development of the world. The plan known as Agenda 21 to the agenda for achieving sustainable development in the 21st century.
 
Chapter 28 of Agenda 21 emphasized the role of Local Authorities (LAs) in implementing sustainable development at the local level through the Local Agenda 21 (LA21). The LA21 is implemented Agenda 21 at the local level. Local Agenda 21 (LA21) is a program that emphasizes the involvement of third parties, local authorities, public and private sector work together to plan and manage their environment towards sustainable development and a higher quality of life.
 
 
Sustainable development
 
The definition of sustainable development "development that meets present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs" (Source: World Commission on Environmental and Development, 1987).
 
The characteristics of Sustainable Development:
 
  • Environment:
    Development really consider the consequences of human activities on the environment and health.
  • Social equality:
    Contributing to the development of the acquisition and control over natural resources.
  • Economic fair:
    Social and economic development to help people meet basic needs.
  • Future:
  Ensure that the results are taken into account does not damage or affect the interests of future generations.
  • Participation:
    The process that allows all people involved.
  • The local / global impact:
    Local development that contributes to the resolution of global issues.
 
The objective of the Local Agenda 21
 
• Expose the public and private sector on issues of sustainable development and Local Agenda 21.
• Explain that the responsibility of sustainable development is a shared responsibility.
• Formulate strategies and action plans Local Agenda 21.
• Implement an action plan in the form of Local Agenda 21 sustainable development projects.
• Adopt the approach and implementation in each local authority.
